Brief History of Siem Reap

Nestled in northwestern Cambodia, Siem Reap, originally a modest village, became synonymous with the awe-inspiring Angkor Wat temple complex.  Its name, meaning “Defeat of Siam,” commemorates a historical victory over Thailand in the 16th century.  The town’s real growth, however, began during the French colonial era.  Siem Reap weathered the storms of war and the Khmer Rouge regime in the 20th century, emerging as a thriving tourism destination.  Alongside its rich history, Siem Reap now boasts a plethora of hotels, offering visitors not just a cultural journey but also a comfortable and luxurious stay.  Today, this city stands as a resilient blend of history, culture, and hospitality.

The Best Neighborhoods/Where to Stay in Siem Reap

Siem Reap is pretty compact, so you really can’t go wrong wherever you stay.  Of course, you’ll want to be relatively close to Angkor Wat (I suggest < 30 minute drive time) and it’s nice to be near Pub Street because that’s where Siem Reap really comes alive.  All of the hotels listed above are in a great location, less than 30-minutes from Angkor Wat and within walking distance or a few minutes drive of Pub Street.

As far as names of neighborhoods, I think some of the best are the Old French Quarter, Charles de Gaulle, and Pub Street.

FAQ

Q:  “What are the best hotels near Angkor Wat?”

  • A:  In the hotels I mentioned above, the furthest hotel from Angkor Wat is only a 20-minute drive away, and the closest hotel to Angkor Wat is only an 11-minute drive away.  Truthfully, many hotels in Siem Reap allow easy access to Angkor Wat, but you will need to hire a tuk-tuk to get around the complex.

Q:  “What are the best hotels near Pub Street?

  • A:  Of the hotels I listed above, the ones walking distance to Pub street (<20 mins) include Amansara, Raffles Grand Hotel d’Angkor, Shinta Mani Angkor and Bensley Collection Pool Villas, Chateau d’Angkor La Residence, FCC Angkor by Avani, Viroth Hotel, Golden Temple Hotel, and The Blanc Residence.

Q:  “How many days do you need in Siem Reap?”

  • A:  I would recommend spending at least three days in Siem Reap.  This way you have time to see the city but you can also give yourself a couple of days to explore the Angkor Complex.
