As my taxi passed security and drove through a tunnel of trees, I thought, “Where in the world am I going?”. As it turns out, I was going to Nirjhara – a hotel set in the jungle with beautiful rice paddies, forests, and even a waterfall surrounding the property. Of course, I knew I was staying at a 5-star luxury resort, but I don’t think I was prepared for just how luxurious Nirjhara Bali is. With two Finnish saunas, a cinema, an infinity pool, and so much more – I couldn’t help but feel like the luckiest girl in the world. Where is Nirjhara Located?
Nirjhara is located in the Tabanan neighborhood near Tanah Lot in Southwest Bali, about an hour and a half drive from the airport. It’s in a more quiet, chill area but still has quaint cafes and bars around the property. It’s also near Kedungu Beach, which is a great place to surf and watch the sunset.
Of course, if you’re looking for a party scene – this area probably isn’t for you. But it feels very authentic Bali and even if you are coming to the island to party, it’s a great hotel to stay in for a couple of days to experiencing a more peaceful and relaxing side to Bali.

Checking in: What to Expect Once You Arrive to Nirjhara
Pulling up to Nirjhara is an ethereal experience in itself. Set within a dense brush of palm trees and rice paddies, when you pull into Nirjhara it feels like you’ve left behind the craziness of the island (places like Ubud, Canggu, and Seminyak while beautiful – are incredibly touristy) and you get to experience a more peaceful and serene part of the island.
Once you’ve checked in you can expect to be given a refreshing glass of juice as someone explains the property and amenities and as the concierge whisks your bags away to your room.

The Staff at Nirjhara
There’s no doubt in my mind that the staff at Nirjhara were the absolute highlight of my stay. Everyone referred to me by name and knew which room I was staying in – it made me feel so special! I was always greeted with a smile and asked how my day was going. I simply can’t say enough nice things about the staff – they truly envelope the whole Balinese hospitality thing.

The Rooms at Nirjhara
This luxury eco-resort boasts 25 villas and suites. Some of the rooms have private infinity pools, and others have private rooftops; but from experience, I can say that the rooms are elegant, luxurious, and comfortable. I stayed in the Canopy Suite (see photos above) and the private rooftop with the bathtub and was such a treat. The amenities at Nirjhara are endless! I’ve touched on several things already, but here’s an overview of some of my favorite amenities at Nirjhara. And know, that this list is long, but not exhaustive! There are so many perks to staying at Nirjhara; here are some of my favorites…
Spa & Wellness
Much more than just a spa – at Nirjhara you can have an entire wellness experience. With a spa assembled around a tranquil reflection pool, The Retreat (as its called) is a place where you can receive therapies from age-old Balinese techniques as well as have access to two Finnish saunas, and a fully-equipped fitness centre.
Nirjhara also has a yoga shala for you to start or end your day feeling invigorated and relaxed. And of course, they also offer private yoga or meditation classes or you can request a personalized yoga session at your private villa.
Infinity Pool
Perhaps one of the most impressive things about Nirjhara is the infinity pool overlooking a waterfall. When you’re out on the deck of the pool, you can really feel the tranquility of Nirjhara. With the sound of the waterfall and overlooking the jungle brush, it’s such a serene and private experience.
Cinema
Something that is pretty unique to Nirjhara (I haven’t seen this at any other hotel I’ve stayed at) is a cinema! They play movies throughout the week where you can sign up to enjoy a “night at the cinema” or you can request a private viewing too. I thought that this was so unique and fun! You can also get cocktails delivered to the cinema so you can watch your movie with a drink in hand or indulge in popcorn, pizza, or other treats.
Experiences
Last but not least, Nirjhara also offers experiences for those who want to leave hotel property and experience Bali. Not only are there a few complimentary experiences offered throughout the week (yoga and bike riding), but you can also pay to take a cooking class, or even get a privatized experience. A few experiences Nirjhara has includes…

The Food & Drink at Nirjhara
One of my favorite things about Nirjhara was their food and drink “program”. The on-site restaurant, Ambu, serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner (as well as providing room service 24-hours) and I kid you not… it might be the best food I’ve ever had at a hotel (and I’ve stayed at a LOT of hotels). I ate at the restaurant for the duration of my 2-day stay and was able to try tons of different dishes and I didn’t have one thing that I didn’t enjoy. I also need to give a special shout out to the farmer’s market salad (pictured above) for being one of the best salads I’ve ever eaten!
The cocktails served at Nirjhara are also excellent with an extra special shout out to the espresso martini and the strawberry cookies cocktail. After spending the day at the pool, I requested for a couple of cocktails to be delivered to my room and was able to drink them on my rooftop bathtub while watching a rainstorm. Core memory for sure ;).
Sustainability at Nirjhara
And the most important thing to keep in mind when traveling and staying in luxury hotels is to ask yourself, how is this hotel affecting the environment? Are they helping or harming the environment and local community? Luckily, Nirjhara has made a commitment to sustainability and has enacted several measure to help the local community and the island of Bali as a whole. My favorite things that they’ve done include…
- No single-use plastics in any villas or guest areas
- Water purification system (you can drink directly from the sink in your room)
- 90% of products sourced locally or from property’s organic vegetable and herb garden
- Eco-friendly heat pumps and solar water heaters
- Bio septic tanks to eliminate contaminants being released to the river
- Community outreach to support local villagers and upskill the local workforce
- Contributing funding to renovation projects such as the renovation of roads the local middle school

TRAVELING THROUGH INDONESIA
- The easiest way to book bus tickets in Indonesia is through Bookaway or 12Go
- Download Grab to get a taxi or motorbike
- To book a flight to Indonesia use Skyscanner or another big search engine (if you’re from the US sign up for Going to get free email alerts on flight deals)
- Indonesia does require a visa, you can purchase one through iVisa or at the airport upon arrival (this option is cheaper but the wait can be long)
- I highly recommend travel insurance when traveling through Indonesia – I use and recommend SafetyWing (read why here and here)

- I recommend bringing a reusable water bottle to keep your water cold on hot days and to cut down on plastic waste
- Don’t forget to travel with bug spray and sunscreen (face, body)
