The Ultimate Carnac Travel Guide

Carnac travel guide

My husband recently took me on a surprise birthday trip to Carnac, France and our trip was just incredible.  (Also, a birthday surprise?! – How sweet is he?!)  This small town on the west coast of France is brimming with Breton culture, history, and coastal charm.  And this guide will help you plan your trip to Carnac and share everything you need to know before you go!

Where is Carnac?

Carnac is a small coastal town in the Brittany (Bretagne) region of France, on France’s Atlantic coast.  It sits between the Gulf of Morbihan and the Bay of Quiberon, about a 2-hour drive from Rennes – the capital of Brittany.  From Paris, you can easily take a train to the region (Auray is a good option) and connect by bus or taxi to Carnac.  If you’re traveling by plane, the nearest airports are in Lorient (50-minute drive from Carnac) and Nantes (2-hour drive from Carnac).  You can rent a car from either airport to make the drive.

Brief History of Carnac (& its Megaliths)

Carnac is one of the most fascinating prehistoric sites in all of Europe.  The area is best known for its vast collection of megalithic stones – over 3,000 standing stones (or menhirs) that date back to around 4500-3300 BC, making them older than Stonehenge and the Egyptian pyramids.  These stones were arranged in rows, circles, and burial mounds, and while their exact purpose remains a mystery, theories range from religious rituals to astronomical alignments.  Over the centuries, Carnac has drawn archaeologists and historians who hope to understand the meaning behind these stones.

Today, Carnac is a peaceful coastal town that blends ancient history with seaside charm, making it a must-visit for anyone exploring Brittany.

Best Things to See & Do in Carnac

Carnac is a small, somewhat sleepy town; but even then – it packs a lot of charm!  These are some of my favorite things to see and do when you visit…

  1. Rent bikes & bike to Saint-Colomban
  2. Visit the menhirs
  3. Shop the boutique stores (Le Kiosque, Numero Sept Carnac, Une Place Pour Chaque Chose)
  4. Have a spa day at Le Celtique Hotel & Wellness
  5. Lounge on the beach – Grande Plage de Carnac

Food & Drink in Carnac

In the Carnac and broader Brittany region of France, the food and drink scene is defined largely by the coast.  This part of France is all about seafood… fresh oysters, mussels, scallops, and crab are everyday staples, usually served with butter or white wine.  One of the most famous local specialties (and my personal favorite) is galettes – savory buckwheat crepes typically filled with ham, cheese, and egg.  You’ll also find kouign-amann, a rich, buttery pastry that originated in this region and has since gained cult status for its caramelized crust and flaky layers.

When it comes to drinks, Brittany has its own identity (different than the rest of France).  Instead of wine, the region is best known for hard cider (traditionally served in small ceramic cups).  You’ll also come across chouchen, a type of Breton mead made from fermented honey; and Breton beers, which have grown in popularity thanks to a growing craft beer scene.

Here are my top recommendations for drinking and dining in Carnac…

  1. A 2 Pains d’ici Carnac – local bakery
  2. La Poele a Crepes – for galettes
  3. Le Cairn – for a nice dinner out
  4. Le Fisher Carnac – for happy hour drinks
  5. La Baignoire de Josephine – for a fun night out

Where to Stay in Carnac

If you’re able to spend a little bit more money, my top hotel recommendation in Carnac is the gorgeous Le Celtique Hotel & Wellness located just steps from town and the beach.  Another great option (and more affordable) is Hotel Edenia & Spa which is also just steps from the beach and from town.
