When my taxi pulled up to Kimpton Maa-Lai Bangkok, butterflies fluttered in my stomach.  With just a swift turn onto Soi Ton Son road, it felt like I had left behind a crowded, bustling city and entered into a peaceful oasis.  While I was still in Bangkok, as evidenced by the skyline view from the hotel, I felt worlds away.  I could watch the craziness of Bangkok as I sipped on a cocktail, happy that I could return to the hustle and bustle at anytime; but satisfied that I got to experience a more serene side to Bangkok.

In 2023, Kimpton Maa-Lai Bangkok was voted “Thailand’s Best city Hotel” per Travel + Leisure Asia Pacific and given the honor of being “Top 3 Travelers’ Choice Best of the Best Hotel Awards in Thailand” per TripAdvisor; and it isn’t hard to see why.  With luxury at every corner, an infinity pool overlooking the city, and incredible restaurants, the friendly and welcoming staff at Kimpton Maa-Lai Bangkok were just the cherry on top of an incredible stay.  This is what you can expect when you stay at Kimpton Maa-Lai Bangkok.

Where is Kimpton Maa-Lai Bangkok?

View from Bar.Yard Rooftop

An ideal location, Kimpton Maa-Lai Bangkok is in the heart of Bangkok in the Langsuan neighborhood.  It’s only a 20+-minute drive to the Grand Palace, less than a 10-minute drive to Siam Paragon (a premier mall in Bangkok), steps from Lumphini Park, and walking distance to many incredible bars and restaurants.

Perhaps my favorite thing about the hotel was that because of its location you’re in the hustle and bustle of Bangkok – yet when you step through the hotel doors, you don’t feel it.  Its truly an oasis in a big, crazy city.

Checking in:  What to Expect When You Arrive to Kimpton Maa-Lai Bangkok

Pulling up to Kimpton Maa-Lai Bangkok, I looked up in wonder as the 40-story hotel towered above me.  With trees and greenery surrounding the hotel you truly feel like you’ve left behind the bustling city of Bangkok and walked into your own luxurious paradise.  As I stepped out of the taxi, smiling employees immediately grabbed my bags to whisk away to my room.

As I sat in the lobby waiting to get checked-in, I was served a cold Arnold Palmer before being given my key and led to my room.  On the way to my room I noticed the cutest dogs in the lobby and when I inquired about this, I was told that the Kimpton Maa-Lai Bangkok is a pet-friendly hotel and pets are welcome at no extra charge.  What a delight!

The Rooms at Kimpton Maa-Lai Bangkok

The Kimpton Maa-Lai Bangkok boasts 362 guest rooms (including 131 serviced apartments) ranging from essential rooms to luxury and family suites.  From experience, I can say that the rooms are elegant, luxurious, and most importantly – comfortable.  No matter which room you’re staying in, here are some amenities that are included…

  • Bespoke HARNN bathroom amenities (exclusively designed for Kimpton Maa-Lai Bangkok)
  • Custom made Simmons mattress with 400 thread count linen
  • Nespresso Coffee Machine
  • Robes by Christian Develter for Tube Gallery
  • In-room yoga mat
  • 24 hour room service
  • Turn down service
  • Complimentary water in glass bottles

Each room truly captures the essence of traditional Thai artisanship that fits perfectly with the hotel’s modern, linear architecture.

Of note, another thing that impressed me about this hotel was their commitment to accessibility.  Not only are there designated rooms for every ability level, but the hotel encourages you to call with any concerns of accessibility.

The Pool at Kimpton Maa-Lai Bangkok

Luckily, you can escape the heat of Bangkok at the infinity pool located on the 3rd floor of the hotel.  The pool is open everyday from 6 am-10 pm.  There’s a full-service bar and you can also get food at the pool.

One thing that I appreciated was that there were both lounge chairs in the sun (with umbrellas if needed) and in the shade.  They even had three shaded cabanas for guests to use.

The Food & Drink at Kimpton Maa-Lai Bangkok

Breakfast at Stock.Room

While I fully encourage you to explore the Bangkok food scene (especially the street food), there are so many incredible food and drink options at Kimpton Maa-Lai Bangkok that its hard to peel yourself away from the hotel.  So if you do stick around the hotel (which I would recommend for at least one night) – no judgement from me!

This hotel boasts multiple different restaurants, a rooftop bar, complimentary happy hour daily (more on that below), an ice cream cart, pastries, coffee, cocktails, the list goes on!  Someone really knew what they were doing when they designed the food and drink options at Kimpton Maa-Lai Bangkok.  Below you’ll find all of the restaurants found in the hotel and what to you can expect.

CRAFT

You can find CRAFT in the lobby of the hotel where you can get specialty coffee, craft beers, and coffee cocktails all day long.  What’s unique about CRAFT is that it works with local communities throughout Thailand to bring fresh coffee beans and the Thai coffee scene to life.  And not only can you get coffee, beer, and cocktails but you can also order fresh baked pastries, and light bites throughout the day.

Ms.Jigger

Also located on the first floor of the hotel, Ms.Jigger is a cozy lounge specializing in both cocktails and Italian dishes.  While Ms.Jigger is a made up character, her zest for life inspires the staff to embody Ms.Jigger’s spirit as they work and create incredible dishes.  As the story is told, Ms.Jigger is a muse who lived her very best life all through the Mediterranean, but continued to come back to ‘la sua preferita’, Italy.

Stock.Room

In my opinion, Stock.Room is one of the most impressive parts of the hotel.  Occupying the 5th floor, not only can you get an incredible breakfast buffet here each morning from 6:30 am to 10:30 am (seriously, it’s the best breakfast buffet I’ve ever had at a hotel in my entire life), but Stock.Room also serves lunch (11:30 am-2:30 pm; closed on Sunday) and dinner (5:30 pm-10:30 pm).

Stock.Room is more than your typical restaurant with live cooking stations, six different kitchens that offer different types of foods, the option to purchase fresh groceries; you can also reserve a room for private events or take a cooking class.

Bar.Yard

There are so many reasons you should make it a priority to grab a cocktail and eat dinner at Bar.Yard (whether or not you choose to stay at Kimpton Maa-Lai Bangkok).  For starters, this rooftop bar and restaurant (on the 40th floor) was named the “Best Rooftop Bar in Bangkok by B.A.D Awards 2023”.  But aside from that, Bar.Yard is an eclectic, tropical bar high above Bangkok where you can enjoy an exciting DJ, fabulous cocktails, tiki drinks, and craft beers, plus farm-to-plate dishes by Executive Chef Lamberto Valdez Lara.

The hours of Bar.Yard are Sunday-Monday 4 pm-1 am and Tuesday-Saturday 4 pm-2 am.  You can make a reservation here.

Amenities at Kimpton Maa-Lai Bangkok

amaranth spa

The amenities at Kimpton Maa-Lai Bangkok are endless!  I’ve touched on several things already, but here’s an overview of some of my favorite amenities at the hotel.  And know, that this list is long, but not exhaustive!  There are so many perks to staying at Kimpton Maa-Lai Bangkok; here are some of my favorites…

amaranth spa

The goal of the amaranth spa is to provide an experience that indulges and revives, while using an array of therapies that combine ancient Oriental wisdom with modern cosmetic techniques.  Just stepping into the spa you’ll feel instantly relaxed.  The minimal, earthy decor and aromatic scent that fills the air allows you to leave your stress at the door and treat yourself to some much needed TLC.

To book an appoint, you can contact the spa by email at spa.kimptonmaalai@ihg.com.

The Gym

Not only does the hotel offer a fully equipped gym, but there are also classes offered and the ability to book with a personal trainer.  The gym is open 24 hours a day but has someone there to personally assist with any needs from 6 am-10 pm.

Afternoon Tea at the Library

Another great amenity offered is the option to take afternoon tea at the Maa-Lai Library.  Located on the 30th floor, not only do you get panoramic views of Bangkok and the lush gardens of the Langsuan neighborhood; but it’s also the highest elevation afternoon tea served in town.  The library is open from Wednesday-Sunday from 1 pm-5 pm.  You do have to have an advanced reservation, which you can make here.

Complimentary Bicycle Rentals

Another hotel perk is the opportunity to reserve bicycles to ride around the area.  The bike rentals are first come first serve and I recommend grabbing one early in the morning (before its too hot out) and making your way to Lumphini Park.

The bikes come with a lock and a helmet if requested.

Happy Hour

Perhaps the greatest amenity of all is the daily happy hour offered from 5 pm-6 pm at the pool.  And what I would consider a true “happy” hour, select cocktails, beer, wine, slushies, and non-alcoholic drinks are free; and you can have as many as you want during the hour.

Not only is it a fun way to get social, but it’s beautiful during golden hour, watching the sky ablaze before the sun sets.  It was truly one of my favorite perks of Kimpton Maa-Lai Bangkok.

Awards & Recognitions

As I mentioned earlier, Kimpton Maa-Lai Bangkok won the coveted award of “Best City Hotel in Thailand 2023” per Travel + Leisure Asia Pacific.  However, they’ve also achieved numerous other awards!  Some of the most impressive include…

  • Best Rooftop Bar – BK B.A.D Awards (2023)
  • Best Bar, Editors Pick – Lifestyle Asia Awards (2023)
  • No. 2 Hotels in Bangkok – Condé Nast Traveler (2023)
  • No. 4 Best Hotels in Southeast Asia – Condé Nast Traveler (2023)
  • The largest Negroni cocktail – Guinness World Records (2022)

FAQ

Q:  “Is Kimpton Maa-Lai Bangkok considered “luxury”?

  • A:  If your idea of luxury is attentive staff that pay attention to the smallest details, restaurants led by renowned chefs, skilled bartenders, in-room touches such as yoga mats, 400 thread count linen, nightly turn-down service, and much more; than yes.  I’d say that Kimpton Maa-Lai Bangkok is considered to be a luxury hotel.

Q:  “Is Kimpton Maa-Lai Bangkok part of a hotel group?”

  • A:  Kimpton Maa-Lai Bangkok is part of the IHG (InterContinental Hotel Groups) family.

Q:  “What time is check-in and check-out?”

  • Check-in is at 3 pm and check out is at 12 pm.  However, in my experience, check-in was flexible as long as there was a room available.

Q:  “What is Kimpton known for?”

  • A:  Founded in San Francisco, Kimpton was the first boutique hotel and restaurant company in the United States.  Kimpton properties strive to make you feel as though you’re staying in a beautiful and stylish home versus an impersonal hotel when traveling.  Kimpton properties are also known for hosting an evening wine hour (in Kimpton Maa-Lai Bangkok’s case more than wine is offered), each Kimpton hotel is Green Key and IHG Green Engaged certified, and more.
