Hotels in Riga: Where to Stay in Latvia’s Capital City

hotels in Riga

In my opinion, Riga is one of the most underrated cities in Europe.  The architecture is incredible, the city is historic, there’s tons of open parks and ways to enjoy nature, and best of all – the city is affordable and the locals are friendly.  All that to stay, it’s definitely worth it to visit Riga whether you have one day or one week!  To make your stay more enjoyable, I’ve mapped out the best places to stay in Riga and the best hotels based on your preferences (I stayed in four different hotels in different parts of the city in my brief visit).  In this guide I’m sharing with you the best areas to stay in Riga, different types of hotels in Riga, and my top picks.

Best Areas to Stay in Riga

Riga is an accessible, walkable city with tons of neighborhoods offering a distinct vibe.  In my opinion, it’s important to choose a location that matches your travel style (for me, that means staying in the city centre/old town area).  But for you, you might prefer something that feels more local or is more historic.  Here are the best areas to stay in Riga…

Vecrīga (Old Town)

As I mentioned, I’m partial to the Old Town area of Riga – Riga’s most iconic and tourist-friendly neighborhood.  I love waking up to the sounds of church bells and being able to step out on the cobblestone streets and walk to a nearby coffee shop while admiring the colorful, medieval buildings and charming cafes.

  • Why stay here:  You’ll be walking distance to major sights like the House of the Blackheads, St. Peter’s Church, the Three Brothers, and more.  This area is lively day and night and it’s perfect for travelers who crave atmosphere and convenience.
  • Ideal for:  First-timers, weekend breaks, solo travelers, & history lovers
  • Keep in mind:  It can get busy and noisy at times; especially during the summer months and on weekends

Centrs (City Center)

Located just outside of Old Town, Riga’s City Center is known for its stunning Art Nouveau architecture.  This neighborhood offers a more local experience while still being central and easily walkable to Vecrīga.

  • Why stay here:  If you want to experience Riga beyond the tourist core, Centrs has great coffee shops, parks, and beautiful streets
  • Ideal for:  Couples, digital nomads, travelers interested in architecture
  • Keep in mind:  Centrs is slightly more spread out, but still pedestrian-friendly

Āgenskalns (Across the River)

Āgenskalns is on the western bank of the Daugava River.  It’s a quieter, more residential neighborhood with early 20th-century wooden architecture, local markets, and a slower pace.

  • Why stay here:  The perfect area for experiencing a more authentic, local scene (without the crowds)
  • Ideal for:  Long-term stays, budget travelers, expats, those with a rental car
  • Keep in mind:  It’s further from Old Town (10-15 mins by tram), so it’s not ideal for travelers who want to walk everywhere

Miera Iela (“Peace Street” District)

Known for its bohemian and artistic flair, this neighborhood is centered around Miera Iela, a street full of independent shops, record stores, and cozy cafes.  It’s a great spot for travelers who want to feel a little off the beaten path (and happens to be my second neighborhood area in Riga).

  • Why stay here:  You’re near great cocktail bars, breweries, local restaurants, and you’ll get a real feel for Riga’s creative spirit.  The atmosphere here is relaxed and youthful.
  • Ideal for:  Solo travelers, creatives, those looking for a more non-touristy area
  • Keep in mind:  It’s not as polished as Riga’s Old Town (but you could argue that that’s part of its charm)

Best Boutique Hotels in Riga

If you’re someone who likes to stay at boutique hotels (and hopefully support local!), the following hotels I suggest are smaller, design-forward hotels that do a great job at reflecting the charm and character of Riga.  Each hotel has personalized service, locally inspired decor, and a cozy atmosphere (that larger chain hotels can sometimes lack).

Grand Poet Hotel & Spa by Semarah

5* Hotel | Neighborhood:  Centrs (City Center)

Grand Poet Hotel is Riga’s flagship boutique hotel, housed in a stately 19th-century building with a bold, modern interior.  Inside, you’ll find dramatic colors, plush textures, and upscale touches that feel both luxurious and inviting.  What sets this hotel apart is its full-service wellness spa, which includes a pool, saunas, and steam rooms; a rare find in Riga’s city center.  There’s also a gourmet restaurant and bar on-site.

Grand Potel Hotel & Spa is ideal for a romantic getaway, solo travelers who prefer a comfortable stay, or anyone looking for a boutique spa experience in the heart of Riga.

Tips for Booking Hotels in Riga

Here are my best tips for booking hotels in Riga…

  1. Book Early for the Best Rates – Riga is a growing destination, especially during summer and December (Christmas markets season).  If you’re traveling during these peak times, book at least 1–2 months in advance for better availability and prices – especially if you’re eyeing boutique or luxury properties with fewer rooms.
  2. Consider Your Neighborhood Wisely – The best place to stay in Riga depends on your travel style.  For first-timers and culture lovers, the Old Town (Vecrīga) is ideal; full of cobblestone streets, museums, restaurants, and a storybook atmosphere.  If you’re looking for a quieter, more residential feel, Centrs offers charming Art Nouveau architecture and leafy boulevards while still being close to the action.  Miera Iela and the area around Kalnciema Quarter are great for those wanting a hip, local vibe away from the tourist core.
  3. Watch for Hidden Fees – Make sure to check whether your hotel includes breakfast, city tax (sometimes added separately in Riga), or access to wellness facilities like spas and pools.  Some hotels offer incredible amenities – but charge extra for things like parking or fitness center access.  Always read the fine print!
  4. Look for Seasonal Deals – If you’re visiting in the shoulder seasons (late spring or early fall), you can often find fantastic deals, especially on boutique hotels and higher-end stays.
  5. Use Filters That Match Your Priorities – If you’re a light sleeper, search specifically for hotels with soundproofing or rooms that don’t face the street (Riga’s cobblestones + partygoers = noisy nights). If you’re renting a car, prioritize hotels with free or secure parking.  For wellness lovers, spa and gym facilities may be a top priority.
  6. Don’t Overlook Guest ReviewsBooking platforms like Booking.com and Expedia can offer insight beyond the photos.  Look for recent reviews that speak to things like staff friendliness, noise levels, breakfast quality, and cleanliness.
  7. Consider Boutique vs Chain Stays – If you want something more personal and design-forward, boutique hotels are where Riga shines.  Many are housed in restored 19th-century buildings, with unique touches and fewer rooms.  But if consistency and loyalty points matter more to you, Riga also has trusted international chains like Radisson Blu, Ibis, and Pullman.
