Paris is my favorite city in the world and in Paris, Montmartre is one of my favorite neighborhoods (only second to Le Marais). The neighborhood of Montmartre is stunning and so quintessential Paris. It’s exactly what I think of when I think of Paris – ornate buildings, beautiful streets, and twisting alleyways. And in fact, Montmartre is where most people say “the most beautiful street in Paris” is – Rue de l’Abreuvoir. It’s truly hard not to love this neighborhood in the north, on top of a hill, overlooking the rest of Paris. After visiting Paris 10+ times, these are my top recommendations for the best hotels in Montmartre.
This guide will showcase (mostly) boutique hotels in Montmartre for all budgets. Overall, Paris can be an expensive city to visit (especially if you’re visiting in the summer in peak tourist season) so prices do vary based on when you’re traveling. (In past experience, I’ve saved hundreds of dollars on hotels visiting in the winter months versus the summer months). However, I’ve tried to be as inclusive as possible in this list giving options to everyone across any budget; but keep in mind that prices still might shock you (I know they shocked me).

Is Montmartre a Good Place to Stay in Paris?

In my opinion, yes, Montmartre is a good place to stay in Paris. It is in the north, so depending on where you’re going in Paris it can take some time to get to other areas; however, both line 12 and line 2 operate to and from Montmartre. As far as things to do in Montmartre – you really don’t even need to leave the neighborhood! (Although I would recommend venturing out to experience other areas of Paris). In Montmartre you have boutique shopping, museums, cabaret (the famous Moulin Rouge cabaret show is in Montmartre), plus tons of bars and restaurants. If you need more convincing, check out my guide to Montmartre here! And if you plan to see cabaret in Paris, read this post of 10 things to know.
Pro tip: If you want to sound like a true Parisian, instead of saying “neighborhood”, use the term “arrondissement”. In Paris, you would say that Montmartre is in the “18th arrondissement” or you can tell a local that you’re “staying in the 18th”.

FAQ

Q: “Is Montmartre safe at night?”
- A: Overall, I would say yes. However, Montmartre can become very touristy (especially at night) due to the Moulin-Rouge cabaret show. For that reason, there’s always the risk of pickpockets and scams. A well-known scam around Montmartre is taxi drivers banning together, charging tourists exorbitant prices to get home. This is illegal but it hasn’t seemed to stop anyone. I would also not feel comfortable as a female walking alone at night or taking public transportation late at night alone in this area.
Q: “What are the best hotels in Montmartre with a view?”
- A: Of the hotels listed above, the ones with the best views of Paris include Terrass” Hotel, Hôtel Littéraire Marcel Aymé , and Timhotel Montmartre. These hotels have rooms that offer views of Montmartre and the Eiffel Tower, but not every room has an Eiffel Tower view.
Q: “What is Montmartre famous for?”
- A: Montmartre is famous for being home to many painters – such as Picasso and Van Gogh – throughout the years. It’s also famous for its picturesque streets, Moulin-Rouge cabaret show, and the Sacré-Cœur – the highest point in Paris, overlooking the city.
Q: “Is it worth going to Montmartre?”
- A: Absolutely! Even if you don’t end up staying in Montmartre, you should definitely spend a day in the neighborhood.
