I have an absolute obsession with Europe. I love the history, the cobblestone streets, the medieval towns. I love that walking is more popular than driving and that travel between different countries is so affordable. I’ve traveled north to south, east to west, and in my travels have narrowed down the best places to visit in Europe. After having been to 30 European countries, exploring most in-depth, these are the top places I’d encourage anyone to travel to!

1. Amsterdam, Netherlands
Amsterdam truly blew me away when I visited for the first time. Sure, I had heard incredible things about the city, but I had no clue how fast I’d love in love with its cobbled streets, twisting canals, and the general chaos of Amsterdam. Whether or not it’s your first time in Europe, Amsterdam is a great place to travel to. English is widely spoken, there are tons of great museums, and Amsterdam is home to loads of history.
- Best thing to do in Amsterdam: Visit the Anne Frank House
- Where to stay in Amsterdam: Hotel Arena

Planning a trip to Europe? As an avid traveler and former nurse, I wouldn’t suggest international travel without the protection of travel, medical insurance. (You can read why here and here). My go-to insurance provider is SafetyWing which offers coverage for both unexpected medical emergencies and travel mishaps… think ER visits, lost luggage, canceled flights, etc.
- If you’re traveling for a short period of time (days-months), I recommend the Essentials plan which covers both travel risks and unexpected medical issues. Plans start at just $2/day and cover things like unexpected accidents, illnesses, medical evacuation, travel delays, etc.
- If you’re a long-term traveler (nomads, year-long trips, etc), I recommend the Complete plan which covers routine check-ups, mental health, maternity, plus everything the Essentials plan covers. Plus the Complete plan extends to 170+ countries including your home country.
2. Barcelona, Spain

One of the most colorful, fun, and intriguing cities in the world, Barcelona is a city that lives up to the hype. Come for culture and art, visit La Sagrada Familia, eat Spanish tapas, and party until the sun comes up. In Barcelona there’s tons of ways to spend your time outside at Barceloneta Beach, or walking through the Gothic Quarter and Las Ramblas street.

3. Bath, England

A quaint English town, Bath is famously known for their Roman Baths that have “healing powers” – which was what originally brought the Romans to the city. Now you can tour the famous Roman Baths as you learn about the history of the city and of the impressive reach of the Roman empire. Aside from the history, Bath is an incredibly beautiful and somewhat romantic town. Stroll the Pulteney Bridge, the cobblestone streets, and don’t miss eating at the wine bar, Corkage, when you’re in town.

Known as “the city of one thousand windows”, Berat is a small and charming town in the heart of Albania. Here you’ll find Ottoman-style homes, old churches, mosques, and narrow cobblestone alleyways. 5. Berlin, Germany

I would argue that for the sake of history, Berlin is one of the most interesting places in the world. As the home base for the Nazi party, Berlin is a terribly sad, but moving and educational city. And aside from the history lessons that Berlin can teach us, today Berlin is also a “cool” city. It has great music, art, restaurants, and outdoor spaces. I’d say, come for the history and stay to celebrate what Berlin is today.

If you’re planning a trip to Berlin, don’t miss…
6. Bled, Slovenia

I have to say, Bled has to be the most idyllic town in all of Europe. It’s here, in Slovenia, that you’ll feel as though you have stepped foot into a picture-perfect postcard. Bled is best known for the famous lake, Lake Bled, a small, turquoise lake with a church in the middle, and a backdrop of perfect mountains. If you want to relax and unwind, Bled is the place to do it.
7. Brașov, Romania

Dubbed Romania’s “most romantic town”, Brașov is nestled at the foot of the Carpathian Mountains and has all the charm that you would expect out of a town that is known for being “romantic”. Cobblestone streets led to colored buildings topped with burnt orange rooftops. The town has a sordid history of being the birthplace of Dracula, giving Brașov an eery and elusive feel. Aside from the town itself, Brașov is an excellent place to base yourself if you want to explore more of Transylvania. Near Bran Castle, Râșnov Fortress, and Peleș Castle it’s the perfect starting place to dive into Romanian culture and history.

8. Bruges, Belgium
A small town in Belgium, Bruges is brimming with beauty and things to see and do. While most people visit as a day trip from Amsterdam or Brussels, I encourage you to stay awhile. One of the most unique cities I’ve visited, Budapest should be at the very top of everyone’s European bucket lists. Budapest is an incredibly affordable city with so much to see and do. On one hand, you can visit historic churches and parliament buildings, learning the history of the area and seeing the incredible monuments. And on the other hand, you can party in the ruin bars all night, eat cheap Hungarian food, and soak in the thermal baths all day. It’s the ideal city for anyone looking for an adventure.

If you’re looking to escape to a truly European city, with fairy book like charm and fewer tourists than most places, Český Krumlov is the place for you. The town was settled in around the 8th-century and still retains most of its old-world feel. Visit the Český Krumlov Castle, stop for a drink at the Apotheka, and dessert at MLS Creperie. With the cleanest streets I’d ever seen, bicycles wizzing by (Copenhagen is constantly ranked as one of the most bike friendly cities in the world), and outdoor cafes; I was convinced that Copenhagen has to be one of the greatest places in Europe. Not only is Denmark ranked as one of the happiest countries in the world, but it’s also one of the safest! It’s quite common for parents to leave their baby’s outside – alone – sleeping in their cribs while they run errands, eat, etc. If that doesn’t signal safe – I don’t know what does!

26. Kotor, Montenegro
Located on the coast of Montenegro in the Bay of Kotor, Kotor is (another) one of the cutest small towns I’ve ever visited. Visiting Kotor was like waking up each day in a far-off, mystical land. One where fortified walls protected the city, moats kept those who wished to invade out, and cats roamed the streets freely. It’s a fascinating city to visit and perhaps the crown jewel of the entire country of Montenegro.
- Best thing to do in Kotor: Hike the Kotor Fortress Trail at sunrise
If you’re planning to visit Kotor, don’t miss…
27. Kuldīga, Latvia
A city that you may have never even heard of, Kuldīga is located about two hours west of Riga. Also famous for having the widest waterfall in all of Europe, Kuldīga will has small-town charm and lots of character.

Lisbon was such a pleasant surprise. I never quite know how much I will like capital cities (I prefer small towns over big cities when traveling), however I was impressed with the down to earth and beautiful town of Lisbon. 29. Ljubljana, Slovenia
A vastly underrated town of cotton candy-colored buildings, bridges, and canals, Ljubljana is an incredibly friendly place to be. Not yet packed with tourists, in Ljubljana, you feel as though you’ve found a piece of paradise before everyone else has discovered it. A place you can get lost as you explore the alleyways and make your way to the castle. Where the locals are friendly, the food is delicious, and the wine is homegrown. My biggest piece of advice? Don’t miss Slovenia’s capital.

Rome is a city filled with art, history, culture, and beauty at each turn. Sadly enough, Rome is a city that I actively avoided when I first began traveling. While I had heard incredible things about Rome, I chalked it up as “too touristy” and decided that I was much better off gallivanting around Eastern Europe and other less-traveled regions. It wasn’t until a pizza craving struck that I traveled to Italy for the first time, and visiting Rome was simply unavoidable. It’s considered to be one of the most beautiful and well-preserved inhabited citadels in Europe! While you can see the town in a matter of hours, it has a charm to it, unlike any other town I’ve visited. While visiting make sure to walk to the top of the Sighișoara Citadel for views over the city and perhaps spend time in the 500+-year-old wine cellar at Teo’s.

Tinos Island is a small island to the east of mainland Greece, part of the island chain of the Cyclades. It’s the fourth-largest island in the Cyclades but vastly underrated and less visited than its popular counterparts – Mykonos, Naxos, and Santorini.
